The components of technology can be beautiful things. Colored bands tell those with the keys to read them the capabilities of each component. To the uninitiated, however, the smallest pieces of objects we use every day are mysterious things. To me, as an artist, they are simply another material I can salvage. Left in dusty boxes in warehouses and electronics surplus stores, resistors, capacitors, and diodes have much in common with Paleolithic artifacts. They have been abandoned in favor of new technology and new materials.  Their inherent beauty is not enough to sustain their useful lives.

Throughout recorded history, small bottles have been used to hold the most expensive and most magical substances. These vessels were decorated with precious metals and gemstones, becoming as magical and mysterious as the oils, herbs, or potions that they contained.

By bringing these tiny amphora together with the cast-off components of the electronic age, I am attempting to create a reliquary for the magical times in which we live. There are people alive today who were born into a world where the streets were populated by horses and buggies.  These people saw the popularization, if not the invention, of the automobile.  They were alive for the invention of the airplane, and some may even remember a sky without the glint of metal or the straight dividing lines of contrails. The technology we discard today is not the technology of our grandparents, or even of our parents, it is our own technology. The magic and wonders of yesterday, set aside in favor of those of today, which will, in turn, be set aside for those of tomorrow.

We live in interesting and magical times.

Many of my beads are available for purchase online at JustBeads.com. This site allows me to show some of my newest work as well as the old favorites which form the cornerstones of my body of work. Whether I'm experimenting with new glazes on familiar forms or trying out new forms, auctions allow me to put new work where jewelry designers can see it.
